Maybe he's trying to illustrate 'preaching to the choir' and thus is wearing choir robes.

Yeah, these giant man-caftans are confusing. But I think there's something in the current Vogue about his losing a significant amount of weight, so maybe he'll retire them. (Or at least downsize to a less voluminous version.) This all-red one is so plain it looks like he's on his way to graduation!
