Everyone Worth Reading
It’s utterly mean-spirited—we admit it.
But we’re finding great joy in Gawker’s campaign against Lauren Weisberger’s new book, Everyone Worth Knowing.
Weisberger’s previous book, The Devil Wears Prada, was purported to be a thinly veiled account of her year-long stint as Anna Wintour’s assistant. The book, not too notable for its literary merit, was hailed as required reading for anyone angling to work in women’s magazines. We’re anti-juggernaut in general, and we’re certainly annoyed by books whose sole merit lies in their potential as a source of sordid gossip. (And Weisberger repeatedly denied that it was based on her former boss, which completely decimated our interest. If those tales weren’t true, then the book was nothing special.)
Did TDWP work to scare off potential applicants? Perhaps. But we think more were lured by the idea of free designer clothes and expense-account cab rides.
Did it inspire everyone with a lousy job to pen a roman a clef in hopes of cashing in? Most likely, considering Weisberger reportedly earned was paid $600,000 for the film rights.
And does anyone take Weisberger seriously as a writer? You tell us.
